The History of Garden Bros: America’s Longest Running Circus

Garden Bros Nuclear Circus is more than just a show. It is a living piece of entertainment history. As the world’s largest big top circus, Garden Bros has been delighting audiences for nearly a century. The circus combines breathtaking performances with a rich family legacy that spans generations.

Humble Beginnings: From Scotland to Canada

The story of Garden Bros Circus begins in the early 1900s with two Scottish immigrants, William Garden and Robertson Garden. The brothers settled in Canada in 1916. They brought with them a passion for performance and entertainment. William Garden pursued a career in Vaudeville where he met his wife, Jean. Together, they formed the song, dance, and comedy act called Garden and Shaw.

After touring the United States, the couple made Toronto their home. William started the Canadian Vaudeville Exchange, which began as a theatrical agency. It later became Garden Amusements Limited. This company would eventually grow into Garden Bros Circus.

The First Circus: 1932

In 1932, William Garden was hired to produce a circus at the Coliseum located on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto. This early version of what would become America’s longest running circus was North America’s only full-time indoor circus at the time. In 1949, William invited his brother Robertson to join the circus business. They later moved the operation to California.

Growth and Change: The 1950s and 1960s

After William Garden passed away, his sons Bill, George, and Ian Garden carried on the family tradition. During the 1950s, they launched smaller circuses that performed outdoors under names like Royal Bros. Circus. In 1959, they officially used the name Garden Bros Circus. They also returned to indoor performances and introduced a circus tent in 1960.

From 1956 to 1965, the Garden brothers tried different show names and formats. Many of these ventures were short-lived. In 1967, Ian and Dick Garden took over the circus. Dick later pursued his own shows while Ian kept the indoor Garden Bros tour going in eastern Canada. The legacy of America’s longest running circus continued to grow and evolve.

Continuing the Legacy: The 1990s to 2010

In 1990, Ian Garden handed the circus over to his sons, Richard and Ian Jr. They continued the touring tradition until around 2010 when the Garden Bros name temporarily disappeared from the spotlight. Even during this pause, the legacy of America’s longest running circus remained alive in the memories of countless families.

A New Era: Revival in 2015

The Garden Bros Circus name remained unused until March 2015. Niles Garden brought the brand back to life with new energy. Niles introduced modern technology, dazzling lights, and a larger approach to the classic circus experience.

This revival included the major 2021 merger with Cole Bros Circus. It was the biggest circus merger since the days of Ringling Bros. The Garden Bros Nuclear Circus soon became known as the largest circus on Earth while continuing the proud legacy of America’s longest running circus. The show now features the world’s largest big top tent.
